Thanks again! I added the ones that are also on Firefly's site. Is there anything else in your zip that should be on the tools list? I don't want to add files without a description of what it does.

Feel free to send anything to me and I'll add it to the site :) The website is backup-ed weekly and I also have a local backup on a RAID drive, so it shouldn't get lost.

I did find the defend patch and the stat patch here: http://actathia.com/sites/rom2/files/files.php

Saved, but what's the best way to ensure nothing gets lost?

Exlend's archives and articles are not completely lost, there are some mirror sites out there that are at least partially functional.

Here is one such mirror site:

https://web.archive.org/web/20091118221800/http://allods.homeunix.org/index.php

I had been compiling a full list of material to send to Ronnie so he could archive it to this site, but before I could send any of it I lost yet another hard drive about 2 weeks ago (I lost TWO hard drives back to back a few years ago which meant I lost a LOT of my archived material then). Anyway, this recent hdd crash means I have now lost a LOT of what remained of my own archive of ROM2 material. So it's even more important than ever that we start getting this material archived to the internet....to replace our own files when lost AND for posterity sake for future people who discover ROM2 and want to play this game.

I don't know russian either, but you can always use a website translator (search Google for FREE ONLINE TRANSLATOR and see what I mean) which will convert most of the russian to any language you want. The translations are never perfect (far from it) but you can usually figure out most of it.

As to your questions:

1. Difference between Allods2 and Rom2....Best I can tell you is that the client and server files are slightly different between these two. Allods2 was released to the russian market and rom2 was released to most of the non-russian speaking world. They are essentially the exact same game, but there are slight program coding differences. I believe Allods2 was supported a bit longer (better) and thus also got a few more updates (bug fixes) than Rom2. Other than that, they are essentially identical as far as I know. Mind you, the folks at Allods.net have made some SERIOUS alterations to the Allods2 files and their version of Allods2 is significantly different than the out-of-the-box version. Likewise with Exlend's Allods2.25 (although he's not done with his new version yet)

2. How to start your brand new character with something other than the standard gear....I'm not real sure either. I thought I had found the program section that controls this, but apparently I had not because after editing it, my characters still started with the same standard gear. I wanted to at least bump new chars down to leather or bronze and take away the starting 1000 gold. But when it comes to programming, I'm a moron. Perhaps someone with the skills (perhaps Exlend) can answer your question because I'd like to know the answer too.

Thanks nova i was talking about the 3, but the exlend's site is in russian and i don't talk it.

But i have 2 questions now

- What's the difference between RoM2 and allods 2 ?

- How make a hat that when you create a new character he starts naked (whithout the steel or iron set) ?

I'm going to have to guess at what you MAY be talking about. I can think of three possibilities:

1. There was an Allods 2.5 group who were working on a different visual look to the game. From what little I know, they were simply changing the graphics, not changing any of the game mechanics. I don't know if that project ever finished. And if it did, I presume it was restricted to the Allods2 game.

2. You could be referring to the updated Allods 2 game being run at Allods.net They have over a dozen site administrators and I assume they still have hudreds of regular players. To play, you have to download their updated Allods2 client and I believe an additional driver or two. The game is ONLY updated for Allods2 and only for Russian (though you can use the english main.res file and 80% of the on-screen items will get properly displayed in english.

3. The last possibility you might have heard about is Exlend's "recent" (he's been working at it for probably at least 2 years already) attempt to re-create all new source code which replicates the Allods2 game. He refers to this project as Allods2.25 (also Allods 9/4) and is always looking for additional team members to join in. Search this forum for his posts and you'll find him readily enough.

Those are my guesses as to what you may be talking about. If I didn't guess right, then please provide more info and perhaps we can all have a better guess.

For the rest of you out there, the game bugs that Exlend just fixed are:

#2 - the STAT HACK is now fixed so if you try to edit your starting character stats, you get stuck with a character that has 25 for all four stats instead

#6 - the DEFEND SERVER CRASH is now fixed so you can't cause a server crash using the DEFEND command (either accidentally or intentionally)

Way to go Exlend. You're awesome.

OK, I made a patcher from Exlend's hex data and had someone else test the changes on their HAT. So we now have independent confirmation that both of these patches DO fix the game bugs.

Exlend, you are a GENIUS. Thank you so very much for those patches. Now I hope you're working day and night on the rest of that list of game bugs.

P.S. Where were you 3-5 years ago when I could have used your ability to patch the game for all my Chaos Servers ??!!....just kidding.

I patched rom2server.exe per your instructions, but for some reason I can't get my HAT to run properly so I can't verify the patches work. The HAT engine is running and all the servers show as being connected, but when you create a character and then try to enter a map, your rom2.exe client crashes instantly. The server window shows your character as having entered the map, but has the (-) sign in front indicating the player has disconnected from the server. And I tried hosting the HAT with the original rom2server right out of the rom2pack.zip but still crashes. I know it can't be the rom2 client that's the problem, cuz I can log onto Atton's GreenWorld HAT and play just fine. Any suggestions as to how to get my HAT running properly again?

At any rate, I CAN verify that attempting to edit your starting stats results in a character that has all 25 stats instead. I just don't know if there are any problems with the patch and I can't check if the defend crash is fixed either cuz I can't even get into a map to try it.

This sux....cuz if I ever want to host a HAT again, I can't until I figure out wtf is the problem.

Actually, bug 8 never existed. You can run many copies of allods2, just same as rom2 and make alt-tab.

This is simply my personal opinion, but here goes. My rankings are based on a combination of two major factors: how detrimental to game play the bug is and also how many people know about the bug and can take advantage of it. I'm not going to rank all of them, simply start with the ones which are the most bothersome. The numbers in front are not a ranking...they are reference to the entire list I originally posted.

Worst ROM2 game bugs:

2. The stat hack is the worst because so many people know how to use it and because it makes the game WAY too easy and unfair.

3 4 & 6 Are a tie for 2nd worst because these are all ways someone can crash the servers. Server crashes are on the one hand annoying, but more importantly they can also be used as a denial of service attack where someone can prevent people from being able to play the game at all unless an active admin is around to keep restarting the servers and ban the offending player (and auto restart can't be enabled or then duping is possible).

11 is 3rd worst because holding of maps (whether done intentionally or by accident or simply because of lag between the server/client also results in denial of service to players who want to play and can't because the servers are locked.

7 & 8 are a tie for 4th worst because using the sight hack or running more than one character at a time gives someone an unfair advantage over someone who does not use these game bugs

All the rest of the bugs would be nice to fix too, but I rate them much less important that those above mostly because there are either ways the admin can work around to prevent them (like using numeric accounts instead of alpha-numeric) or so few people know how the bugs work that no one is likely to ever use them.

That's my list of worst game bugs. I'd be curious how my rating compares with the opinion(s) of other players.

Whoops...yes that's what I mean. That's what I get for trying to post from work in the middle of the day. Can't devote full concetration to what I'm typing. Sorry.

Yes, ALT-TAB and flip back-forth between multiple sessions of the game.

Author: exc!ton (vladimir [dot] chebotarev [at] gmail [dot] com)
Date: 17-Jan-08, 20:22:53
Do you mean Alt+TAB?
Then you can start another session with another account...

Author: NOVA (KINGKOTA666 [at] HOTMAIL [dot] COM)
Date: 17-Jan-08, 19:01:03
8. You can start multiple sessions of the rom2.exe client and then use SHIFT-TAB to jump back and forth between these multiple program sessions thus alternating control of more than one account on the same computer (very much like jumping back and forth between any other programs). The advantage this gives a ROM2 player over an Allods2 player is that you can have more than one HAT account and use a mage in one account set to automatically "defend" your fighter. You then directly control your fighter in the 2nd account and the mage just follows you around casting healing on you.

If you try to start another session of Allods2, it simply brings you to the one single session you already have running, so you would need two complete separate computers for one person to run more than one account at the same time.

I hope you understand my description. I'm not sure what the proper terminology is to describe it.

1. GM hack I is the only one I have already fixed (I just included it so the list was complete).

I'd LOVE to see fixes you may already have or be able to achieve for ANY of the others. That's GREAT !!!

Hmm... can you tell more about 8?
I think, 1,2,13,17 can be solved by using modified hat and 6,11,12,14,19 - modified server.

As a follow up now that the list is started.....

1. GM hack is really the only one already fixed on the rom2 game.
17. for this one, the solution up to now has been to use numerical-only account names to prevent this. It works, but it really kinda sucks having just numbers for all the accounts cuz they're so hard to remember.

The rest of them remain unsolved (at least for the rom2 game, maybe they are fixed for allods2)

I chose not to put a fully detailed description on each of them so that the post would not become 20 miles long. I was also reluctant to make the list public at all for fear of only spreading the knowledge of and use of the stuff. And I was doubly concerned about giving a full enough explanation so people would learn how to do them just by reading the list. At least this way they are just noted briefly and those of you who already know them will recognize them instantly. Many of them have developed an accepted common name that everyone calls them. Not sure how the names got developed or who first used the names. In parenthesis ( ) after the common name, I tried to list a brief description of what the cheat/bug was. Just enough to identify what I was referring to but not enough for someone to be able to go out and do the cheat/bug, at least in most cases.

Ok, here goes my pathetic little list of known game bugs/problems that really would be nice to fix. It's just a starting point, so don't flame me if I don't explain them well enough or if I have left some off...whatever. The point is to just get the list started and build from there.

Here goes.....

1. GM hack (activating cheat mode on a HAT server)
2. Stat hack (editing process memory and giving your brand new characters maximum stats - body, mind, etc)
3. Speed zero server crash (when your character speed goes to exactly zero, the server crashes due to a division by zero error)
4. message screen flood crash (you can crash a server by flooding the message screen with too long a message)
5. Absorb trick (if you drink an anti-poison potion followed by a health regen enhancing potion, the regen value becomes your absorb value instead of the standard anti-potion value of 50)
6. Defend crash (if you set your character to "defend" someone else and that someone else leaves the map the server crashes)
7. sight hack (you can edit either memory or the client program and give yourself maximum sight range regardless of your real character sight range)
8. multiple character control (with rom2.exe you can run multiple sessions of the game and thus run more than one account at a time, allods2 does not allow this)
9. long range staff casting (you can cause the mage staff to cast the range of an autocasted spell thus increasing staff range immensely)
10. magic beard fighter character corruptor (there is a magic beard in the game left over from solo game that if a fighter equips it will corrupt that fighter character)
11. disconnect from game to hold map (if you disconnect from the game session before a map ends, you can come back and have held the map past the normal shutdown and no one else can join nor will the map end until you leave)
12. shop hack (you can modify the rom2.exe client so that the shop pays you the cost of items rather than deducting the cost, effect is unlimited gold).
13. monster hack (a modified rom2.exe client will allow you to take over control of map monster groups via a flaw in the diplomacy packet protocol)
14. earth wall server crash (sometimes when you cast earth wall on a fast moving monster, the server will crash)
15. speed roll (if your character speed goes below zero = it rolls back to 255 and you are fast as hell)
16. character POP (if your character health exceeds 32,512 it rolls back below zero and your character drops dead instantly)
17. alpha-numeric account (allows multiple simultaneous access to the same account thus allowing for multiple copies of the SAME character to be on a map at the same time)
18. PK Mage trick (you can get a mage to do equal physical damage as a fighter with bare hands punching)
19. shop money trick (on shops with huge scroll stacks such as 1000 or more, you can add up all purchases to be more than 2 billion gold and gold rolls to negative 2 billion. hitting BUY means double negative and you are given 2 billion gold PLUS the items)
20. spell autocast often does not work on flying monsters
21. fog of war (client edits or trainers can be used to give indication of other character health even though they have not given you vision).

That's my list so far. I'm sure I'm missing some. If you know of any, please add them to this thread. If you have a better descriptoin of any of them, please add it as well. I've tried to keep this post as short as possible so it's not too confusing.
