Yes, sorry about that guys and gals. I was out on a business trip for a week clear on the other side of the USA. I just got home an hour ago and discovered Windows did an auto-restart sometime while I was gone.

The web site and HAT should be back online now.

Two comments:

1. I personally would not bother with "multiplayer" because, frankly, it sucks ass compared to HAT server play. If you wish to play any kind of online version of ROM2, I would STRONGLY urge you to investigate setting up a HAT server of your own. Both the number and the magnitude of benefits are staggering compared to "multiplayer".

2. As to what is the cause of your failure to connect to your brother online, I can only guess (as can anyone). However, I would suspect router/firewall blockage as the most likely cause. Running different versions of Windows OS I suppose is a possible (albeit rather unlikely) source of the problem. Assuming you and your brother do NOT share a common LAN connection, you might want to look into using some sort of VPN (Virtual Private Network) that mimics a LAN despite the participants being far-flung across the internet. You can of course set one up yourself if you know how. You can also utilize "commercial" programs that would do that for you. HAMACHI is one such program and it is FREEWARE provided you do not use the service for business purposes. The advantage of such programs is they create a tunnel between all such VPN network participants through which communication traffic can pass and therefore avoid any pesky attempts by firewalls or routers etc. to block. Just a humble suggestion.

Good luck with it.

Thanks! You pretty much covered it all (at least, I don't have any doubts about HAT servers).
But I really wanted only to play with my bro. Though, now I may take a look about the HAT servers (as soon as I finish the campaign game, because I fear that letting ROM2pack overwrite my game may delete, where I just killed the king).
Now for another question. I thought of something: I can't play with my bro on computer (even though I discovered my IP and tried it, but didn't work), could it be because my computer is windows and my bro's is vista?

This will be a rather short response (at least by my standards). If you still have questions afterward, please keep asking them.

There is a clear distinction between what ROM2 calls "multiplayer" verus "server" play.

Think of multiplayer as direct-connect where one player must also act as the host. When this host leaves, the entire game closes for everyone. It is much less stable and you have very limited places to play (everyone MUST play in the same map at the same time - the one the host is playing). The stock game as installed is configured with multiplayer capability, but frankly it sucks.

Contrast that with server play (called a HAT dedicated server in ROM2) where a separate server program runs on someone's computer. It can run on anyone's computer (they don't even have to have ROM2 installed to host it). Here, as long as that server program keeps running, the game keeps running and anyone can connect and play at will. You can also configure up to 200 individual maps that run at the same time where each player can jump back and forth between those maps at will. So everyone does not have to play on the same map at the same time all of the time. All of the maps keep running even if no one is playing at the moment. Even if the host player quits playing completely, as long as the dedicated server program keeps running other players can keep joining, playing, and leaving at will.

I would STRONGLY urge you to choose the server version of online play. The ROM2PACK.ZIP is the game patch that upgrades your ROM2 game so that you can host or play on a dedicated HAT server. Simply unpack this compressed package and allow it to write over your existing ROM2 files. It will update your game installation and allow you to join or even host a HAT server.

Every player on a HAT server must have a personal account that allows you access to your server characters. In HAT play, all your characters are stored on the server computer instead of being saved locally (so there is much less chance of players cheating).

Now, one of you must host this dedicated server OR you must find someone else who is already hosting one. I happen to be hosting a cheap slapped-together HAT server right now. It's not a great one, just slapped up for goofing around. I have ran others in the past that were much more serious and better. But if you are interested in checking it out, you are welcome to do so. You can make your own account to play there at the following autoregistration web site.

http://173.24.220.101/reg2.php

Once you have patched your game with the rom2pack.zip, you will find a "globe" icon in the upper right of the game start screen. Holding your cursor over that, the word SERVER should appear in the center of your screen. Selecting the globe will bring up the screen asking for the information to connect to a HAT server. You will need an account (user and password) and also need to know the IP address where the HAT server is hosted. My HAT IP is 173.24.220.101

If you are inclined to hosting your own HAT, I would be happy to walk you through all the necessary steps. I strongly advocate this. There's nothing like being in control of your own gaming experience. You and your friends can play when and how you desire. And you have the option to either keep your server private or you can invite others to play too. It's not difficult to set one up, it's just intimidating when you haven't done it before.

Catch me online if you want to discuss anything in real time. My MSN ID is kingkota666@hotmail.com I apologize if I'm not there often, but I work 10+ hours per day.

Good luck and welcome to the ROM2 online world.

Yeah, but I already tried the 4 (I have 4 connection options avaible, and my bro has 3) choices I have and none worked until now. 2 of them didn't work because of my lack of computer experience... 1 of them is through modem, which requests some kind of number or something to identify, and the other through computer IP, which, I am ashamed to say, but I don't know how to discover my IP...
So I'd like to know if anyone can help me with knowing my IP or some other way for my to play rom2 with my brother.
Note: we both have CDs (yeah, 2 rom2 CDs) so don't worry about it.

If I rememebr correctly the rom2pack is also necessary to play on a Hat Server.
Even if I am wrong, having it installed will not hurt -- I am sure.
Anyway yes, if you use rom2pack, your brother needs rom2pack as well.

As for the connection to choose I remember that you do not have too much choice.
Maybe 2 choices, and 1 of the 2 will only work if you know the IP address of a working Hat Server.

Playing on a Hat Server can be fun.
Surely is if you have more than just yourself to play with.

The difference with Multiplayer is that a Hat server is a, um, Server who provides several maps at once.
And you can play on any one map.
And all maps are "online" at the same time, and they "live" their life whether or not you are there to witness.

Each map is hosted by a sub-server applet (Rom2Server.exe, if I am correct) on its own.
Each sub-server then communicates to the Hat Server -- and there you know why it is called "hat" (it is a "cap" worn on top of them all).

Your game communicates with the Hat server to obtain a list of map-servers available.
Then you pick a map to play on, and the ball (you) is passed to the selected Rom2Server map.

Do not ask _me_ how to setup a Hat Server though.
I remember it is not difficult.
The tricky part are the ports and the IPs to assign.
I recall something going "in pairs" about them.
But so much time passed since last I did it, that I forgot most of it.

Others here can give you precise directions, I am sure.
Maybe ask to NOVA. Pull his jacket -- haha

But be polite.

Ok, thanks for replying.
What kind of connection do I choose? Also, do I need to have "rom2pack" on both computers?

well since you only want to play with your brother I think all you need is rom2pack (and i dont think you even REALLY need that)and just make sure your computers are on the same network and try to connect.

I'm not gonna lie, I didn't search much, but what I searched I didn't find the answers for my questions, so I thought about asking you people.
I had ROM2 long ago and never managed to play multiplayer, so now I am trying to and I heard about those hat servers and stuff, which seem important to me.
So, how do I play on a hat server? Also, I've downloaded something called "rom2pack", which I think its for those servers. If I'm going the wrong way, could someone tell me how to play multiplayer?
Note: I wanna play with my brother, not alone, lol :P
